Korean age calculator: compare three ways to count

Enter a Gregorian birth date and a date to compare. See man nai (age at the most recent birthday), traditional Korean counting age, and year-based age side by side. They answer different questions; only one is the usual default for legal and administrative age in South Korea.

The second field starts with today’s date in South Korea (Asia/Seoul). You can change it to compare another day. No time-zone conversion is applied to your birth date.

Which age is used in South Korea?

Since June 28, 2023, man nai—age counted from birth and advanced on each birthday—is the general standard for legal and administrative age. Year-based age still matters where a particular law uses it. The Ministry of Government Legislation has its own official man nai calculator; this page adds the two cultural comparisons so an overseas reader can understand why the same person may be described with different numbers.

This is an explanation, not an eligibility decision. Rules for school entry, military service, alcohol or tobacco purchases, exams, insurance, and other specific situations can differ. Check the current rule with the responsible authority. If you choose a date before June 28, 2023, the calculator still shows the three mathematical values; the paragraph above describes the current general standard, not a historical legal determination.

How the numbers differ

For someone born December 31, 1990, on January 1, 2026: man nai is 35 because their 2026 birthday has not arrived; traditional counting age is 37 (2026 − 1990 + 1); year-based age is 36 (2026 − 1990). Traditional counting age is useful for understanding older conversations and cultural references, but it is not the general legal default.

A February 29 birth creates a genuine edge case in a non-leap year. On February 28 of that year, the tool shows two possible birthday-based results—one if February 28 is used and one if March 1 is used. It does not choose a legal birthday for you. From March 1 onward the two calculations agree.
